Do you know what it takes to become an explosive javelin thrower?

April 12, 2019 by Editor

In all track and field events, the athlete needs to develop power. And they will develop power by improving the speed, strength, and explosiveness of their body’s conditioning.

When it comes to the javelin throw event, it isn’t any different. Athletes must be able to convert the speed and power developed on the runway and in their upper body to throw the javelin as far as possible.

There is one question that javelin throwers need to answer so they can perform better in the javelin event.

How can a javelin thrower increase the velocity of their throw?

The athlete needs a strong and explosive movement to throw the javelin in the air.

If you think about the muscles that matter the most, the athlete needs to develop the explosive action of their muscles pulling from behind their body to the front where they will release the javelin.

Developing the speed of this motion from back to front, with the power via resistance weights and bands, can help to condition the power of the athlete for the javelin event. You can also use medicine balls to help develop your explosive power.

Wall balls (Overhead)

Get a medicine ball and throw it at the wall with as much explosive power as possible.

Throw a shot put

Alternatively, you can grab a shot put and aim to throw it as far as possible.

Tricep extensions

You can do this with the barbell or single dumbbells. Aim to develop explosive power in the 8-12 rep range.

You can also see more training footage in the video below.

Are there any other training methods that you think should also be here? Let us know in the comments below.
